New fighting broke out along the Afghanistan-Pakistan border early on Wednesday, with each side accusing the opposing side of starting deadly clashes.
Pakistan's military stated that its forces had eliminated "15-20 Taliban fighters" and injured many in the Spin Boldak district frontier area.
A Afghan authorities representative claimed that 12 Afghan civilians had been killed and over a hundred injured by artillery from Pakistan. He added that numerous military personnel had been killed. Not one of the alleged deaths could be verified by third parties.
Hostilities between the neighbors has flared since blasts shook Afghanistan last week, which Kabul blamed on Islamabad. The Taliban reject allegations that it is sheltering militants targeting Pakistan.
The opposing forces are not only fighting for the advantage on the frontier, but also on social media, attempting to persuade the general population that their faction is causing greater losses.
The latest clashes follow severe border hostilities over the weekend, when the Afghan forces claimed to have killed 58 members of the Islamabad's armed forces and Islamabad reported it killed 200 "Taliban and linked insurgents". The reported casualty figures announced by each side could not be confirmed by external sources.
A few days of unstable peace that had persisted since the weekend were shattered on Wednesday morning.
Footage allegedly of the conflict and its aftereffects have been shared online and on messaging groups, including footage said to be of those deceased and grainy shots from night vision cameras claiming to be of guard positions demolished. These videos have not been verified.
A source in Spin Boldak in Afghanistan stated that clashes broke out at around 04:00 local time (23:30 GMT on the previous day). Another local in Spin Boldak, who lives about a short distance away from the frontier post, said that "intense clashes persisted for almost five hours".
"We observed unmanned aircraft and jets flying over us, a number of our family members are wounded," they said.
A medical professional in one of the medical facilities in the region reported that he counted "seven bodies and 36 injured transported to the medical center", including males, women and minors.
The circumstances were "strained" and more casualties were being transferred to hospital, he noted.
A local authority figure in Spin Boldak announced that "numerous of households have been displaced since the previous evening due to the heavy fighting". He said they were on "maximum readiness" after a few military positions were targeted by Pakistani jets. He further indicated that they had the bodies of two armed forces members.
In a distinct night-time clash on the western border, the Islamabad's forces claimed that twenty-five to thirty Taliban and local insurgent fighters were "believed" to have been killed.
The clashes have led to calls for reduced tensions from other countries including Beijing and Moscow, as well as a proposal from US President Donald Trump that he could step in to broker a ceasefire.
On Wednesday, Richard Bennett, United Nations representative on the situation of human rights in Afghanistan, posted on a social media platform that he was "deeply concerned" by reports of civilian casualties and displacement because of the fighting.
"I urge all parties to exercise maximum restraint, protect non-combatants, and abide by global regulations," he stated.
Pakistan has long alleged the Taliban authorities of allowing the Pakistan Taliban to operate from their territory and fight against the Pakistani administration in an attempt to enforce a strict religion-based system of rule.
The Afghan Taliban government has always denied this.
