Cars in Germany's City Discovered Marked with Swastikas in Human Blood, Law Enforcement Report

Incident location Affected vehicle Local Law Enforcement
Authorities reported they were contacted by a resident who found a car in Hanau smeared with reddish substance

Around fifty vehicles have been marked with what seems to be human bodily fluid in the German municipality of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, according to law enforcement.

Cars, exterior walls and postal boxes were defaced, sometimes with Nazi symbols, they stated in a statement.

Officers report they were notified during the night on Wednesday, when a man discovered that a car in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been marked with a reddish-hued fluid.

The fluid had been drawn in the pattern of a swastika, they added.

Officers then found multiple other smeared automobiles and building exteriors in the adjacent neighborhood.

Swastikas are illegal in Germany under legislation banning the visible presentation of symbols from the Nazi era.

Officials state early analysis show the liquid was probably blood from a person.

"Currently there is no lead as to where it came from; authorities are not yet cognizant of any injuries in relation with the event," they added.

City officials stated they were working "to resolve the case" and have appealed to the community for details.

A senior official stated the vandalism left him speechless and needed to be addressed quickly.

"This event hits the very heart of Hanau and revives the trauma of the far-right attack five years ago," he stated on social media, recalling the death of nine people by a shooter aiming at people of foreign heritage in February 2020.
