Fallout 76 Reveals Substantial Expansion With Classic Fallout Inspirations and Walton Goggins

For the 64th significant expansion since its initial release, Fallout 76 is set to introduce its biggest addition yet in December. Called Burning Springs, this massive update will bring additional firepower, new missions, and transport players to the previously unexplored area of Ohio.

An Impressive Journey

At one point, the notion of this online Fallout experience receiving such a substantial update a considerable time after launch would have appeared highly unlikely. When the MMO initially debuted in 2018, it received negative reviews from reviewers and players who considered the early build buggy and conceptually incomplete. Numerous assumed it would meet similar ends as similar online attempts of that period.

Players arrive and they initially find much content, and they explore their world. The team's strategy was simply remaining dedicated and continuing to create the content that we are confident our players will love, and that we would want to experience.

Venturing Into Unexplored Regions

The new content represents the most substantial update to date. The most significant element is the map expansion, allowing players to cross the border into the Ohio region and explore what events have occurred there. Spoiler alert: Danger lurks!

For the development team that venturing into a new state after extended time in the original setting presented an perfect chance to develop an previously unexplored area within the game world.

We had not really explored this region in the game's history too much, stated the creative director. Starting from the current map, if you move east, you start approaching the Capital Wasteland. That region has been well established. Ohio hasn't really been explored extensively. Accordingly, this installment being set earliest in the timeline provides us various development possibilities. We decided to explore what's occurring in Ohio!

Taking Cues from Previous Games

The most catches attention about Fallout 76's depiction of this new territory is that it's presented as a desert wasteland. This may look surprising given the real-world location of Ohio, but there's a strategic explanation for this artistic direction: The aesthetic was significantly drawn by Fallout 3 and New Vegas.

Instead of simply copying aspects from previous titles, the creators prioritized capturing the essential spirit of those experiences within the new expansion.

Our approach wasn't focused on looking at those titles and declaring we need specific elements, stated the creative director. The objective wanted to achieve was taking the unique atmosphere of those previous titles and having that faithfully captured in the new content. The direction I instructed the developers when we started development on the additional area was: It must include arid landscapes, Deathclaws, and plenty of enemies. To me, that represents what the third installment and the Vegas title characterize. Those are the key components that create the characteristic feel of those games, and so I aimed to have that mirrored here.

Television Series Connection

The positive reception of the Fallout television series created a substantial rise in user engagement for the online game, with statistics indicating a substantial player growth. The studio recognized they needed to capitalize on this situation, but lacked the sufficient timeline to execute a comprehensive connection immediately.

The method came through organic development when the creators identified the perfect connection with the noseless antihero, who becomes a bounty hunting vendor within the new expansion.

We were determining what this new region would feature, what the characteristic feel would be, and then what the signature element of the expansion area would evolve into, that's bounty hunting, stated the creative director. What person better to host such activities than this character? He being a knowledgeable admirer of the games too, he was quite willing to partner with us and make this happen. Therefore it didn't start as from the onset, but it developed through natural progression of the gameplay.

Coming Updates

This expansion doesn't represent the final major update for the multiplayer experience. The studio is actively creating on the first substantial next year's content and preparing additional content continuing as far as the seventy-second addition.

There was a moment where we never thought there would actually happen an that many content additions, stated the development lead. Now we're at a stage where things are so successful, for both the television series and the online experience. It's genuinely quite remarkable to consider that there's an update 76 that could potentially align with, potentially, future developments!
