Prince William will attend the important UN climate summit in the South American nation in the coming weeks, however the prime minister's participation is still unconfirmed.
The Prince is set to award the global environmental award and take part in the conference of representatives from more than 190 governments in Belém.
Environmental experts applauded the prince's participation. One consultant noted that it would enhance what is likely to be a difficult conference, where international consensus on new targets for lowering greenhouse gas emissions is essential.
"Does Prince William attendance at the summit a stunt? Yes. But that doesn't mean it's a bad idea," she commented. "The summit has long been as much about what's termed 'optics' as it is about negotiations. The Prince's decision will probably encourage other delegates to participate, and will attract worldwide attention."
"It's likely the Prince is fully aware that by showing up, he'll attract millions of viewers to the summit. In an era when global warming consequences are increasing, but press attention is falling, any effort that draws attention should be celebrated."
King Charles has attended earlier Cops, but is not attend in this one.
A leader from a climate research unit said: "All hands on deck – and every prominent figure like Prince William, there helping argue for the complex task that must be done, is almost certainly a beneficial move."
"[King Charles was the Prince of Wales when he went to Cop26 and contributed to motivate talks. I don't believe it necessarily needs both of them to attend."
The British prime minister has yet to announce if they plans to join the conference, to which every world leaders are invited, with many set to attend. The leader was widely condemned by prominent climate advocates for appearing to waver on the decision recently.
"International representatives should be in Brazil for the climate conference. Attendance is not optional, it is a demonstration of responsibility. This is the moment to lock in enhanced government targets and the funding to implement them, especially for adaptation" to the impacts of the climate crisis.
"Global citizens is paying attention, and history will remember who participated."
