Additional venues to hold sprint races in 2026 will be Shanghai, Miami, Canada and Zandvoort, which is leaving the calendar after next season
The upcoming season features two dozen Grands Prix and was announced in June
It features an additional event in the Spanish capital Madrid as well as the event hosted by Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, which has hosted the Spanish Grand Prix since 1991
Barcelona's contract concludes following the 2025 championship but it is in the running as a potential host scheduled to share a slot alongside Spa-Francorchamps
Other events which indicated an interest for a shared slot consist of Hockenheim or the Nürburgring, Portugal and Istanbul Park
The championship organizers is also working on plans for a new race in Bangkok, potentially as early as 2028
The series has featured six sprints each year since 2023 and organizers opted to maintain the total next year owing to increased pressure on the teams following revised technical and power unit standards set to debut
However, series officials reviewing increasing the total of shortened-format weekends beginning the following season potentially a dozen, implying sprints at half the races throughout the year
A sprint event comprises a shorter race with its own qualifying round, before qualifying and the main event
Conventional F1 event has three practice sessions prior to Saturday qualifying and the main event
There are also discussions about modifying the format of sprint events, that may involve experimenting with reversed grid formats
