While many fans in the UK focus on their clubs' season-opening fortunes or discuss upcoming autumn internationals, the battle for World Cup 2027 qualification rages on at full pace.
Chile earned their back-to-back appearance at the tournament with a stunning playoff victory over Samoa recently, leaving only a single place left to be claimed for the host nation in two years. Meanwhile, the Paraguayan side stunned Brazil 39-19 in the first leg of their playoff.
The second leg is scheduled on Saturday in JacareÃ, near São Paulo, as Brazil's men's team aims to emulate their women's success and qualify for the first time.
Whether Paraguay completes a surprise aggregate win, or Brazil recovers after manager Emiliano Caffera's departure, the lineup for next month's Dubai qualification tournament will then be finalized. The Namibian team, the Belgian squad, and Samoa are already confirmed spots for the Middle Eastern competition from November 8th to 18th.
Many additional teams have likewise secured their places. The Hong Kong China team sealed first-time qualification following beating Korea by a large margin in July, while the Zimbabwean squad will return to the sport's most prestigious stage for the first time in over three decades after claiming victory in the Rugby Africa Cup.
The knock-on effect of Chile's qualifying triumph means that Los Condores will face Italy for the first occasion next month during the autumn internationals, replacing Samoa who are obligated to participate in the Dubai tournament.
The global governing body's chief executive called Chile an "exciting and fast-emerging power" in announcing the forthcoming fixture in the Italian city. While domestic rugby promotional efforts seek larger crowds, Chilean rugby is buoyant. A sell-out audience of over 20,000 saw the qualifying win in the coastal city, and manager the national coach has guided the team on an improving path since his appointment in 2018.
The fifty-year-old ex- Uruguay international prop has been making an impact for decades: recruited by the English club in the 1990s, he memorably ran straight through England defense to score at the 2003 global tournament.
His impact as national coach has been similarly significant: Chile have risen to seventeenth place, their best ranking. During the last tournament in Europe, they were defeated four times, allowing 215 points and registering twenty-seven, including a 71-0 loss to the English team.
Nevertheless, they confidently took the positives, and following the tournament draw in Australia on December 3rd, Lemoine can start preparations in earnest. They faced the Scottish team last year, losing by a significant margin before 24,000 supporters, and although they were defeated over both matches by Uruguay in the first 2027 playoff, they managed a 21-18 win on the road in Montevideo.
The Samoan team, meanwhile, have not missed all Rugby World Cup for decades, but are presently sitting in 16th position in the global rankings. They were without a victory in this year's regional tournament, leading to playoff misery versus Chile, and the requirement to meet teams like Belgium adds further difficulty for the proud rugby nation.
Apart from individual nations' performances, it is worth noting how changed the larger tournament will look in 2027. For the first occasion, there will be a round of 16 with six groups of four teams instead of four pools of five teams. Pool-stage risk is much lower because the four best third-placed teams will additionally qualify.
The organizers, Australia, are now ranked seventh in the world, which means they would fall short on top seeding and could face one of the Springboks, New Zealand, Ireland, the French, England, or the Pumas in their group. They could rise into the top six during a busy November, however: England, Italy, Ireland, and France are their fixtures, with a match against the Japanese team in the capital additionally scheduled for October 25th.
Wales, on the other hand, are balanced in twelfth place, with Japan behind, and the consequences of dropping to thirteenth and into the third seeding group are possibly significant.
Another new dimension for 2027 is the presence of five nations from the Americas: the Argentine team, the Uruguayan side, USA, Canada, and the Chilean squad – with either Paraguay or Brazil possibly making it six. From World Rugby's perspective, engagement from the Americas is positive, especially with the 2031 World Cup set to be staged by the USA, and the selection process for the 2035 tournament was initiated recently.
First things first, however. The return match of Brazil versus Paraguay sets up a four-way qualifying contest, along with a possible rankings shake-up across Europe in the coming month. No matter the outcome, Chile's successful qualification for a second consecutive World Cup has already made them as a resounding success story.
