Authorities in Tasmania are striving to determine a pink slime that has surfaced on a isolated coast, with certain experts worried it could be an algal bloom.
The pink-tinged sludge was found on a stretch of a coastal area about 60km south of Hobart. A comparable ooze has also been noted on parts of another local beach and an additional coastal site.
Specimens have been collected and provided to the regulatory body for testing. A representative stated that "phytoplankton proliferations are a natural occurrence in response to variations in nutrients, warmth, rain or light".
"The events are occasionally called crimson or rosy tides because the proliferations can color the water crimson," the official noted. "Only some algae outbreaks are dangerous, with several kinds acting as a major source of energy for animals in the oceanic food chain."
"The most common cause of crimson tides in Tasmanian waters is the oceanic algae Noctiluca scintillans, which can create luminous nighttime effects at night."
Algal blooms happen naturally but their occurrence has increased in recent times, partially due to environmental shifts and contamination that merge to create food-loaded oceans ideal for the quick expansion of dinoflagellates.
Dinoflagellates are a type of algae that typically act as the ocean's detritus consumers. During a bloom, there is a fast increase in their populations that interferes with the healthy balance of marine environments.
These occurrences have been likened to underwater bushfires and can keep expanding as long as circumstances are favorable. In more extreme scenarios, delicate ocean habitats can be devastated as aquatic animals is destroyed or smothered, providing more minerals for the outbreak.
A southern state in the past confronted a catastrophic phytoplankton proliferation along its southern shore after a series of marine heatwaves, which expanded across a vast area. The outbreak resulted in surfers with sore eyes and hacking coughs and may have caused the death of up to 250,000 marine animals across numerous types, according to official estimates.
A marine expert, who was involved in studying the onset of that event stated, based on pictures of the current situation, the likely culprit involved was Noctiluca scintillans, a form of dinoflagellate also known as "marine shimmer".
"There have been numerous of these blooms around Tassie of late," she added.
The scientist explained this organism did not create poisons similar to the type involved in South Australia's severe outbreak, but it does consume tiny creatures and "numerous fish eggs", meaning fish and crustacean species were in greatest danger.
"You usually see a bloom of the organism after a outbreak of another organism, or an event such as a fish reproduction," she said.
Lilly Henley, who gathered specimens of the pink sludge in the state, commented it appeared the potential proliferation had "increased notably" and proposed the fish farming business was the most likely culprit, referring to comparable events elsewhere.
"So the state needs to send a firm alert here, the authorities and the environmental agency need to respond to this. We need to examine the samples we've taken and we need to put word out the people here," she said.
Henley said she had anxieties for people's well-being after experiencing a tingling sensation along her body while being splashed with contaminated seawater.
An environmental foundation has reported deceased sea creatures and expired organisms appearing on the coast, with a longtime environmental campaigner labeling the event as an "natural disaster" and urging the local leader to inspect and "take control the reaction that authorities must be doing".
"The leader needs to know this is a crisis in the happening, commercially as well as ecologically."
Addressing journalists, the leader commented he was uninformed of any connections between the algal bloom and the salmon industry, emphasizing scientific testing was required before conclusions could be made.
